Jeffrey Butts, director of the R&E Center, is interviewed for the story. “The problem is that law enforcement people should not be asked to do that — to screen people and to assess whether they pose a threat to themselve or to others. That should be done by a clinician of some kind, and I think California would probably be better off if they used a combination of clinician and law enforcement personnel to have that initial contact.”
